AN ENTICING BROOKLYN GIG BY THE IRREPRESSIBLY AMUSING STERLING STRINGS (REVIEW)
JULY 13, 2021
They turn DJ Khaled’s Wild Thoughts into a vampy, kind of creepy tune. Cellist Eric Cooper bows his bassline, cello-metal style, instead of plucking it out, and the rest of the group – violinists Frederique Gnaman and Edward W. Hardy, and violist Patrick Page – choose their spots to sliiiiiiiiide around. They sneak a couple of devious classical quotes into Despacito; their murky version of Eleanor Rigby is pure chamber metal, raising the song’s menace by a factor of ten.

"It is not background music, nor should it be performed as such, but rather as another character in the play. I had to express musically a complex set of emotions and communicate with immediacy underscoring each action, each moment, and each scene. I tried to complement each actor’s unconscious habits, in how they move in and out of scenes and interact with each other. It’s the little things that matter."

INTERVIEW: JAMES ORTIZ ON CREATING STAGE MAGIC IN ‘THE WOODSMAN’
MAY 3, 2016
The songs by Edward W. Hardy feel like a combination of working songs like "Heigh Ho" and other folk tunes. How did you find the style of music you needed to tell the story? [Ortiz] "It was about trying to depict Oz through the filter of the world in which Baum wrote---the latter half of the 1800's in America which was a really extraordinarily difficult time."

The story comes culled from Frank L. Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and is presented by a brilliant ensemble company of actors, actor/puppeteers, a violinist, and Japanese Bunraku-style puppets. (The terrific music is by Edward W. Hardy, with lyrics by Jennifer Loring.)
THE WOODSMAN: WHEN THEATRE LEAVES YOU BREATHLESS (REVIEW)
MARCH 16, 2016
Throughout the piece, there is a glorious folk music score composed by Edward W. Hardy (music) and Jen Loring (lyrics), much of it a mournful, melancholy commentary on the story... The music is consuming and heartbreaking, an emotional thread throughout the piece that is accentuated by an ongoing violin solo hypnotizing us into the world of Nick Chopper.
